As we expected that Google will update page rank i.e PR in April 2010 and today finally on 3 April 2010 Google rolled out Page rank for everyone. Seems like this time page rank comes as a good news for every one. One of my website got Page rank=2 and another one in different niche managed to get Page rank=3.

Last time we discussed on Google page rank update 2010 or Google PR update 2010 and many users added that they don’t really care about Page rank and only traffic means a lot to them.

Googlebot : Hi….hello everybody….

Me : Wow, thanks for your time…. How are you today?

Googlebot : Sure I’ll read all the webpage’s content, collect the keyword for my database, find any format that violate my Term of Service, and I look for tunnels/link that can lead me to other webpage.

Me: Oh, I just want to know….How can I make my article listed in your result page for a targeted keywords?

Googlebot : Easy…put your keywords in your title tag, meta keywords tag, meta descriptions tag, posted article’s title, your first twenty words in article…spread the keywords in your article, and close the article with your keyword. The first keyword in your article should be bolded. ….and the most important thing is the anchor text of your inbound link. What is anchor text? It’s the word that your link partners use to make a link to you. It sounds like a vote for your blog in my ear (If I have one)….

Me: Wow, is that enough to be listed in your result page?

Googlebot : Yes, but I can’t give you any guarantee that your page will be listed in the first page…. I think it will be enough if your targeted keywords is a low competition keywords. But if you target for a high competition keyword…you will be asked more….

Me: Oh…what is it?

Googlebot : I’ll ask for your link popularity, the number of your visitors, and I’ll consider the age of your webpage

Me: Oh,…that’s why people try to increase their pagerank and alexa rank….to compete for a high competition keywords….hmmm…. I see … I see… By the way, how to get a high pagerank….

Googlebot : Hahaha….easy you must have a lot of backlinks or high link popularity to achieve a high pagerank…. Do you?

Me: Hehehehe … I did some link exchange for that….

Googlebot : What?!!! I don’t like it. Link exchange is a method to manipulate your pagerank…. You should get your backlink by increase the quality of your contents….

Me : Oh, so you don’t like the method. Then why don’t you punish bloggers who use this method?

Googlebot : I can’t. It’s because I can’t feel the difference between link exchange and a normal reciprocal links. But you know....I don’t have to worry about anything. Reciprocal link has a lower value than a one-way backlink. It makes me can see the link to a high quality contents.

Me : Oh…I see… My next question is …”How to decide the pagerank that you will give to a page?”

Googlebot : Easy…consider it like this… I make a visitation to a page which have PR3, and the page has 70 links on it. One of those links is directed to your blog. How much poin you will have from a blog like this? Easy…your point is (3/70)*0,85= 0,036.
If your page is indexed but has no backlink, then your point is only 0,15.

Me: Hah….it’s to small….If I want to achieve PR3, then I must look for …. Hmmmm…. Let me count first… 3-0,15 = 2,85……then 2,85 : 0,036 = 80 links…. But, I found a blog which have over 100 links but their PR is 0. Is there something wrong with my calculation?

Googlebot : Hehehe….those +100 links is a reciprocal links, and that means I have to iterate the value until I get a steady state value. Which means the point will be decreased. It’s just like water which always looks for a flat surface.
After all….not all of your link partners have PR3…. Most of them has a lower PR….and don’t forget, most of them have blogs with over 100 links (The link exchanger)

Me: Oh….I see … that’s why most of the PR3 blogs in my country must have +200 backlinks to get the PR? Oh, before I forget,…Yesterday my friend with a PR3 blog found that his blog’s PR has been lowered to PR2….why?

Googlebot : Hmm….consider it like this… Your link partners had 70 links when you asked for a link exchange. But today he has 200 links on his page…. And that means the point that he pass to you is getting smaller and smaller. That’s why if you want to have a steady PR, your backlinks should be one way backlinks. If your backlinks come from link exchange activity, then you must always do the link exchange to keep or improve your pagerank…..

Me: When you will visit my blog again?

Googlebot: Well, it’s depent on your luck. If I found a blog with your link on it…I’ll come to your blog again…

Me: Hahaha….so there is a luck factor in this business….

Googlebot : Yup…. Oh…don’t forget…I have some limitation. I will get some troubles with a page that contains to many links… If your link is the #156 position,….probably I won’t see the link, or I will find your link, but after some visitations….hehe

SUMMARY OF SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION (HOW TO GET A POTITION IN THE FIRST PAGE OF GOOGLE’S SEARCH RESULTS)
Search Engine Optimization is not an easy thing, and there is no guarantee that your efforts will bring a good result. I’m a beginner in this blogging world, but I think God helps me to understand about this stuff.

Before you start the whole process, I just want you to know that as a beginner you will need a lot of luck to win the competition. But the most important to make you win the competition is the knowledge. SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION is a combination of a lot activity. One single mistake can make the whole process worthless.

So, I’ll explain the whole process step by step.

#1 Step…Preparation
Consider it that you don’t have any blog, and you’re going to create your first blog. The first activity to be done is to choose your blog’s theme. What topic you are going to write in your blog? For example your topic is Home Based Business
Next activity is to create your blog in blogger.com. Make sure you use a template that has a left position main area. It means your article will be shown on the left side and the gadgets on the right side. Why? It’s because the spider crawls from the top-left side to the bottom-right side. Make sure the spider find your article before your gadgets? Why??? It’s all about your keywords.
Next,….create your article. Each time you want to create an article, you must do some keywords research. For example, your article will talk about Affiliate Program. Open the GOOGLE EXTERNAL KEYWORDS TOOL. Type AFFILIATE PROGRAM in the keywords box. Enter the anti-spam code and click on GET KEYWORDS SUGGESTION button. Wait for the result, you will see a list of keywords with their data. Try to choose a low competition keywords. You can find a keywords with nearly empty competition bar. But, make sure you choose a keywords that has a good search volume. Now, write your article and spread the keywords in your article. You don’t need to repeat the keywords more than four times, but make sure that your article’s title contains the keyword.

OK, you already have your first blog

#2 Step…On-Page Optimization
Now it’s time to optimize your webpage. It’s needed to make the spider feels happy when it visits your blog. We give the information that spider needs to classify your blog in its index.
Put the title and meta tag in your blog’s HTML. How to put the meta tag and title tag? Just read my META TAG AND TITLE TAG article. It is very important factor in search engine optimization…
Make sure that your blog’s title and your article’s title contain the keywords
It’s good to use label for your article. You can add labels on your article when you create the article. Make sure that the label contains your keywords.
If you want to create another article that is not related to your blog topic. It’s better for you to create another blog. Remember, one Google Account can be used to create many blogs. Just click on create blog link on the top right side of your dashboard. If you try to blend another topic in to your blog, It will hurt the relevancy of your blog to its basic pattern. Since I joined a paid review program, I try my best to keep my blog on its basic form.
Put the keywords in your Widget’s Title and if you use image, please use ALT attribute in its HTML. The ALT attribute must contains the keywords.

So, if you do this, The spider will love your blog and can find the main color of your blog easily.

#3 STEP….OFF-PAGE OPTIMIZATION
Even if your blog is beautiful as miss universe, it will bring nothing if spider can’t find it. Do you know what I mean? So the last process is to make the spider can easily find your blog.
Do you ever think, why we named the robot as spider? Coz it crawl from a website to other website. It can’t arrive to a website if there is no web connects the website. The web connection is the link on the other webpage. So, we are going to build a lot of links that directed to your blog
You can build link by doing some link exchange, or pay for a PPC advertisement, or posting your link in a forum, bookmarks services, and other webpage

Hahahaha….it will need a lot of backlinks to get PR3 above for your blog. You can open a PR 3 above blog and count the number of backlinks. If you can create those backlinks, I guarantee that your PR will be lifted up.

Is that all?…well, I have my last suggestion for you, before your blog listed in Google, you can promote your blog manually by inviting others bloggers to visit your blog.

I did this and one of my four months old blog is being listed in Google first page for 34 keywords…. If you are a new blogger, just enjoy the process coz it will take one month to see some results.

Many Blogger users have reported that their custom favicon has suddenly been replaced with the default orange Blogger favicon.

The reason for this is that the 'all-head-content' includable (the content generated for page headers when your blog is viewed in a browser) has been updated to include the following line:

<link href='http://www.blogger.com/favicon.ico' rel='icon' type='image/vnd.microsoft.icon'/>

Thankfully, there is an easy "fix" for this issue!

Simply locate the line(s) of code you have added to your Blogger template to reference your custom Favicon, and move these just before the closing </head> tag in your template.

The reason this trick works is because the code to reference your custom favicon appears after the lines added by Blogger to reference the Blogger favicon. In all HTML documents, code which appears later in the mark-up takes precedence over any tags which appear earlier (unless of course, statements are attached to make the earlier tags preferential!).

Favicons and Internet Explorer

When using Internet Explorer 6, you will only see favicons appear in the address bar if you have bookmarked the site you are viewing.

The tern "favicon" is short for "favorite icon", and as such Internet Explorer will only display the favicon of a site if the site is recognized as one of your favorites (ie: if you have bookmarked the site in your browser!).

Some people also report that the favicon will only display when viewing the particular page they have bookmarked, and not the entire site. In this case, you would need to restart your browser for the favicon to appear in the address bar of all pages.

Your internet security settings (both in Internet Explorer and any anti-virus/anti-spyware programs you use) may also affect whether or not favicons will be displayed in IE6.

Many webmasters are anxious to know the number of people who trust the rumor that Google will penalize your site for sharing content belonging to some other site.

It seems to be doing the rounds and for quite a while now, though little of it seems to be true.

Inspite of Google declaring that there was no such thing as a content duplication penalty, web surfers still believe it to be so. One has to realize that if the mighty ‘Google’ makes a statement, it surely must be true.

As far as people’s ignorance and misunderstandings are concerned, take a look at the image below. I found it at a website of an affiliate marketer trying to sell a product which promises SEO miracles. lol.

Coming back to the topic, in the case of duplicate content, the results are filtered from the search engines. However, it is indexed, so you just have to click once again to see what’s there.

This sure is capable of raising doubts, but it is necessary to keep in mind that a penalty for content duplication is just a piece of fiction.

If there are 2 sites having same content, Google will discharge one of the pages from its index, but the site does not receive a penalty. The page is dropped because it has previously been indexed on another site. However, if the site totally contains only duplicate content, then it may receive a penalty.

By now, most of us already know that Google page rank (PR) update takes place every 3-4 months once. I am not a big fan of page rank but it is still a good measurement to calculate number of quality backlink a site or page received. Pagerank is still one of the measurement factor in setting advertising value for a website or blog. Most advertisers still prefer to get a dofollow backlink from high PR relevant quality sites. Although, Google don’t allow us to sell or buy links with dofollow which may lead to penalties, there are still many bloggers and webmasters sells links that passes PR juice. Most advertisers believe that nofollow tag added link have no value at all.

Anyway, it is truly depend on the advertiser and webmaster to sell or buy dofollow links. Penalties from Google can lead to pagerank drop or pagerank removal completely regardless of 3-4 months period. It won’t take 3 or 4 months for Google to give penalty to site. This means page rank update will take place for 3 to 4 times a year. If your site drops in pagerank not during the major pagerank update means your site might get some sort of Google penalty. Let’s talk about the history of pagerank prediction. For last two years, Google updated pagerank widely to most website and blogs online just before New Year.

I have noticed that twice, once by end of 2008 and the other end of 2009. So, my guess will be the same for 2010 too. I have seen four updates taken place in year 2008 and 2009. I assume there will be four updates in 2010 too. Since, last update done before New Year that is 31st December 2009, next pagerank update most probably will take place by 31st March 2010. If Google follow that 4 months once update, then the next pagerank update will take place by 30th April 2010. The reading of following pagerank update will be adding another 90 to 120 days from March or April 2010. The same cycle goes for every pagerank update. How to Import/Export a Blog to Blogspot

New Feature: Import and Export in Blogspot
Today’s release brings another long-desired feature to Blogger: Import and Export of blogs. Now you can export all of your posts and comments into a single, Atom-formatted XML file for easy backup. You can then import the posts back into Blogger, either into an existing blog or into a new one.

To export your blog, log in to http://draft.blogger.com/ and go to the Settings > Basic page. You’ll see the Blog Tools links at the top of the page for importing and exporting. (We also moved blog deletion up here from the bottom of the page. Don’t worry about accidentally clicking it, though; your blog wouldn’t be deleted until you confirmed on the next page.)

Once you click “Export blog” and press the “Export” button on the next page, your browser will prompt you to save the XML file for your blog. Keep it somewhere safe as a backup, or import it into a different blog. You can import one blog into another from the Blog Tools links, or when creating a new blog. Look for the “Advanced Options” at the bottom of the page.

When you import a blog, all of the posts will get saved in an “imported” state. From there you can publish just a few, or all of them at once. Here are some ideas for what you can do with importing and exporting:

•Merge two or more blogs into one. Take the exported posts and comments from one blog and import them into another one.
•Move individual posts from blog to blog. After importing, select just a set of posts to publish and publish them with one click.
•Back up your blog to your own storage. You can keep your words safe and under your control in case anything happens to your blog, or us, or if you want to remove them from the Internet.
•Move your blog somewhere else. Our export format is standard Atom XML. We hope to see other blogging providers extend their Atom support to include import and export. And, if you decide to come back to Blogger, importing your export file will get you back up and running in seconds.
Caveats

•The export format currently only covers blog posts and comments to those posts, not blog settings or templates. To back up a Classic template, copy and paste the template code from the editor. To back up a Layouts template, use the Backup / Restore template option to download a copy of your template.
•Before importing a blog for the first time, we recommend that you create a new, throwaway blog to import into so you get a sense for how the process works. Once you’re comfortable, import into your public blog.
•At the moment there is a 1MB size limit on the blog you can import. This is a bug that we are correcting the issue.

Reciprocal links can also help to increase traffic to your web site in two ways. Firstly, you will probably have some viewers visit your site from clicking the reciprocal link directly. Secondly, most Internet search engines take into account the number of web sites which contain links to your web site; the more hyperlinks to your site found, the higher up in the search engine rankings (depending on the search term) you'll find your site.
Reciprocal linking between web sites became an important part of the search engine optimisation process thanks to the link popularity algorithm PageRank employed by Google, which ranks web sites for relevancy dependent on the number of links that led to a particular page and the anchor text of the link.

Guide To One Way Link Building - One Way Link Building Secures Long Term Ranking Results
Link-building should constitute no more than 10-15% of your search engine optimization practice. You want your linking to be efficient, effective, and long-lasting. Here are a few link building tips to help you improve your search engine optimization practice and your search results.

Links start at home
Most people now agree that internal navigation is extremely important to the search optimization process.

1.You want to use concise, meaningful, keyword-rich anchor text in your navigation
2.You want to provide alternative, content-embedded links to deeper content in the site where it makes sense
3.You want to use alternative anchor text for secondary on-page links
4.You want to provide cross-promotional links on as many pages as possible in as unobtrusive a way as possible
Keeping in mind that the user experience should be your first priority, you want to strategically position links throughout your site and your pages. Your navigation should serve both the user’s needs and your own self-promotional needs. But your content provides you with many opportunities to inform your visitors about relevant, related content.

Avoid PageRank manipulation schemes. They are ineffective wastes of your time. Instead of putting rel=’nofollow’ on links pointing to your “About Us”, “Terms of Use”, “Contact Us”, and other important pages, use those pages to point your visitors to content you want them to find. People search for these pages so you need to ensure they can find them. Remember, the user experience has to come first, not the latest SEO fad.

If you’ve developed a cross-promotional link widget (server side includes make this extremely easy to implement), you can embed it on your so-called incidental pages to help people get to the content you value most. In fact, you SHOULD be embedding that widget on those pages. You should be using those pages in every way possible to help the rest of your site.

The alternative anchor text that I suggest for secondary on-page links may puzzle you. We know that in some rare situations Google passes the second link’s anchor text. However, the consensus point of view (which I support) is that you probably don’t want to invest your time in placing multiple links to one destination on a page. However, there are time where the Web designer may feel this enhances usability.

If you’re going to embed a secondary navigational link structure on your page, you might as well as use the anchor text to describe those pages with alternative keywords. Regardless of whether that passes any value to the destinations, it gives you an opportunity to use alternative keywords in an appropriate on-page context AND it may help some of your visitors.

Keyword anchor text is relevant to both the linking page and the destination page. A lot of people in the SEO industry have gone to forums and asked why such-and-such page appears in search results when it has no links pointing to it with matching anchor or any apparent paragraphs or titles using the keywords. Every time I have looked at these mystery pages I have found outbound links using the keywords.

SEOs have a huge blind spot for the on-page value that outbound link anchor text provides. It’s still part of the on-page text. It’s not like the link is being treated as something separate from the page.

Leverage your friends’ sites
It’s a time-honored tradition that we all advise our clients to get their moms, pops, and cousins to link to their sites. Frankly, just dropping a link somewhere on a random site doesn’t provide much value in my opinion. I’d rather have a link from a relevant article.

Not some freebie article the friend picked up off the Web and dropped the link into. Rather, I’d want to write the article. It doesn’t have to be a Michael Martinez-quality 50-paragraph text marathon. Just 2 paragraphs of 50-100 words each can provide your friends and relatives with enough text to add a page to their sites.

If you make these micro-essays relevant to both your friends’ content and your own site, you can reasonably embed an author’s credit link that uses link anchor text to help your site. But that’s just cream.

The real value in creating these micro-essay pages is that they stand pretty good chances of ranking well for long-tail queries. I have tons of referral traffic from sites that carry essays I’ve written. So what if their links don’t pass anchor text in Google? They’re sending me qualified traffic. That’s called free advertising in a qualified marketing channel.

Can this technique be abused? Sure. It’s being abused right now. There are link brokers out there selling pay-per-post links. There are people calling and harrassing honest Webmasters like me, asking if they can put content on our sites.

For this kind of link building, you MUST draw the line at the end of your friends and relatives. I’m not interested in hosting some cheap schlocky advertorial on my site. But if a friend wants to put an essay on my site, you’d better believe I’ll be very, very agreeable (in fact, I HAVE allowed friends to post essays on my personal sites more than once through the years).

SEOs write guest essays for each other’s blogs. You can create guest pages for your friends. They get some interesting content and you get a link from a page that has a good chance of ranking for something that sends qualified traffic to your site.

Directories, Directories, Directories
For about $100 you can get someone in India to drop your link on 1500-2000 worthless directories. I’ll admit that I toyed with the idea of using one such service last year but after looking at the list of directories I decided there was no traffic value. Maybe I would have gotten some temporary PageRank and anchor text, but we all know Google hates those guys (and probably also Yahoo! and Microsoft).

Directory submission is certainly a useful link building technique, but you should personally vet the directories. Remember, the link you get may not pass PageRank or anchor text but it could still pass traffic. I’ll take a nofollowed link that passes traffic any day of the week, so evaluate the directory. Use third-party resources like Alexa, Compete, and Quantcast to estimate how much traffic they may actually receive. Those estimates won’t be accurate but a dead directory is not likely to show up on those services’ radars, and you just want to know if a directory actually gets traffic.

The fewer ads per page you see on these low-value diretories, the better. But if they use the expression “SEO friendly” or in any way talk about the value of links, etc. then don’t even bother submitting to them.

You should set yourself a limit, too. I would not see a need for most sites to submit to more than 20-30 directories.

Micro sites, off-site blogs, and co-owned sites
Someone recently went to a popular SEO forum and asked if they should invade a new query space with micro sites. The poster claimed to be working with an “authority” site (whatever that is). I and a whole lot of other people suggested the micro sites would be counter productive.

If you have a domain that is well-established in the search results, it’s been around for a few years, and you want to take on a new query space, just put the content on the domain you have.

Micro sites serve useful purposes in many contexts, but they are abused by a lot of inexperienced SEOs and spammers. They are also created wastefully by businesses that don’t understand Internet marketing.

The most compelling reason for creating a micro site (in my humble opinion) is to establish value for a standalone brand. But there are other less compelling reasons that make sense in the right situation as well. You can think of topics and content three-dimensionally, for example, and create concept sites that provide your visitors with tightly related but extremely different content. You literally split a brand value across multiple sub-brands.

This approach works well in the entertainment Web for television shows and movies, as well as online games. User communities, supplemental information, and news/interviews are often posted on micro sites in a network of closely associated sites. The primary brand is the official Web site of the television show or movie. Rarely will you find such a site linking out to other sites (beyond its satellite sites). More often the studios put their outbound links on one of the micro sites, all of which also link to the primary brand site.

These satellite site networks succeed because each site brings enough unique content and concepts to the user experience that it makes sense for people to link to them all (or to more than one of them). News articles link to multiple sites in these networks, fan sites link to them, forums and blogs link to them, etc. It’s a great strategy when you have the right concepts and content to work with.

But understand that the best, most successful micro sites are built on concepts, not content. That’s a HUGE distinction and a lot of SEOs seem to be completely unaware of it.

Still, a lot of business sites can employ the micro site strategy successfully without having to build online games and user forums. For example, you can set up your company blog on another domain. Some SEOs say it looks unprofessional to put a blog on Blogspot or Wordpress. Frankly, I disagree with them. But if you feel that’s not an option, there is no reason why you cannot put your business blog on its own domain or sub-domain. You can link to the business site.

Technically, in a network all the sites tend to link to each other, but you give yourself links from newer content on satellite sites to deeper content on the primary site. A blog is more likely to attract new links (if you post to it regularly) than, say, an article archive. If you publish press releases on a regular basis you may have sufficient content to create a press release sub-domain or domain. All of these types of sites, however, should serve unique purposes that don’t really fit in well with the primary domain’s concept.

Companies that operate complementary brands (you see a few such companies in the travel and lodging industries) can usually cross-link their branded domains provided they don’t get greedy. The holding companies rarely provide much content under their own names. However, I have found a few holding companies that actually issue press releases or post other unique, promotional content on their corporate sites that help promote (and link to) the brand sites.

The old press release trick
Ah, yes. The old press release trick. Matt Cutts has indicated that Google is on to the old press release trick. You know what I’m talking about: you run around to 10-15 press release distribution sites and post the same badly written pseudo-press release announcing to the world that you’ve assigned yourself a designated parking space. And the press release links back to your site.

Some press release venues actually drive traffic to Web sites. I know because I’ve published press releases and have seen the referrals. Traffic is a lovely thing to have, and if you can publish a decent press release that is well-written and likely to capture someone’s imagination, it may be worthwhile. Just understand you need to spread the cost of publication across the visitors you receive. You’re not paying for a value-passing link.

But can press releases still pass value? Sure they can. Maybe some services pass value and others don’t. But you know, there are Web sites that will republish press releases for you without charging a fee AND they’ll give you a link. How do you find these sites? Look for them in places where other SEOs are not looking.

There are many businesses that can get other sites to post content about them if the businesses stop thinking in terms of “money for links”. You need to think of terms of “reaching out to a community that is interested in what I do”, and “reaching out to Web sites that want content that I can provide them”.

If your business participates in trade shows, makes presentations at schools or community organizations, sponsors community competitions or sports teams, or otherwise engages with people outside of its normal business operations, the chances are pretty good there are Web sites out there where you can get a blurb, a press release, a custom-written article, or some sort of announcement posted with a link back to your site.

These are the kinds of sites that SEOs cannot drag all their clients to (but don’t be surprised if someone has hammered a few Webmasters in these categories). These sites may be run by local community organizations, local governments, schools, or enthusiasts. They may have small audiences or large audiences. They may be connected to other sites that will pick up their news and events announcements. One link can spread across many sites if you provide compelling enough content.

So, how do you find out if these sites will carry your content? Ask them.

Ask them without including the content.

Ask them before you send the content.

Ask them without talking about search engine optimization.

Ask them without mentioning Google, Yahoo!, or any other search engine.

Contact the site operator and treat him or her like a human being. Don’t shower them with faux compliments about how great their site is.

The people who have been most successful in getting me to post their content on my network have been very honest, very direct. “Michael, our company does X, Y, and Z. We want to work with Xenite.Org to create some content that we feel would be of interest to your visitors. Please contact me for more information.”

Dudes, I’ve picked up the phone and called people right away when I’ve received messages like that. They don’t come from the SEO industry. They come from television producers, TV and movie studios, manufacturers, and other folks. I’ve never seen an SEO be so straight-forward, so honest, and so willing and able to help me create content I can use.

You want a link? Give me unique content that no other site is allowed to have. I’ll give you a link in a heartbeat. If there is a magic bullet in link building, unique, original content is the magic bullet for link building.

I’ve stopped promoting companies whose marketing campaigns shifted from providing unique, original content to sending out press releases to mailing lists. As soon as you put me on a mailing list you’re dead in the water. As soon as you assume the sites you’ve contacted are all willing and able to republish every piece of tripe you send out, you’re off my radar.

You get value for value. It’s a simple exchange.

Okay, that’s not a press release trick, but that IS where it came from. The old press release trick can work if you don’t treat it like it’s a machine that punches out die-stamped links on demand.

The old blog comment trick
Here on SEO Theory, (and over at Best SEO Blog), we regularly delete (and report as spam) posts from people who drop by to say, “Great post Michael, you’ll find I wrote about the same thing at [some Web address I have never heard about]“.

As someone who has leveraged blogs to build traffic and visibility, I feel there are some boundaries that should be respected. Here are the guidelines I try to follow when posting comments on other blogs:

1.As much as possible I just embed my link in the link field that converts my posting name to a link
2.If I feel compelled to drop a link in the message, I try to link to someone else’s site so that I’m making a legitimate recommendation
3.If I feel like I really have something I’ve written that is worthy of note, I drop the link on a blog where I have an established history of participating in discussions and to which I have myself linked
As we all know blog comment spam has been around for years and it’s not likely to go away. Even if the links are nofollowed (and even if your tests suggest that Google occasionally follows nofollowed links), the best value you can get from any link in a blog comment is visibility.

People read and respond to those comments. You can look like a shmuck in more than one way but dropping a link in your message is about as dumb and shmucky as you can look. It says you’re naive, inexperienced, and don’t know how to build links or how to understand their value.

So, yes, I’ve looked dumb and shmucky on occasion, but if people have some idea of who I am, or if I take the time to say something more than, “You can read my blog at [some web address you've never heard of]” there is a good chance they’ll click on the link under my name.

Traffic is all that matters. Interested, converting traffic that produces regular readers who subscribe to the blog feed, come back to read the articles, and maybe provide links to the articles on their own blogs is what I’m after when I’m being self-promotional. Frankly, when I comment on someone else’s site, my first priority is to add my opinion to the discussion — to provide value to the other site, in as much as I can do so.

Wrap up
There are, of course, other ways to build one-way links. But these methods work very well and they help improve the user experience in many ways. The more value you get from a link, the better. You want more than just PageRank and anchor text. You want traffic, visibility, credibility, and ultimately trust (from the people whose sites link to yours).

The less time I spend building links, the better. If I want links in volume I’ve got options that I don’t say much about. Of course, I’ve mentioned 20 Links A Day more than once, and I think it’s a great program. There are alternatives out there and many people have used them on occasion.

In fact, the more linking resources you acquire, the more effective your link building becomes if, instead of saturating each resource with as many links as you can dump on it, you exercise discretion and balance your use of those resources wisely. You should always think in terms of “I need more links, therefore I need more resources”. As soon as you saturate a link channel you’re done with it.
The decision to burn out a resource is a very short-sighted one. The decision to nurture a resource and make it reusable for a long time is a very powerful one.

Does Website Structure Matter to Search Engine Optimization?
Does Website structure matter to SEO is a great question that should have been asked about 10 years ago. It’s being answered on many SEO blogs and forums but not in a very formal way, in my opinion.

Website structure helps your search engine optimization in several ways. Let’s take a brief look at how that plays out.

1.Website structure directly influences your site’s crawlability
2.Website structure facilitates or inhibits growth
3.Website structure may improve your on-site optimization
4.Website structure may improve your SERP optimization

Website structure directly influences site crawlability – This point is being made by more people than ever but it seems to be trapped within the thought circles of the SEO community. The difference between a crawlable site and a crawl-inhibiting site structure is most easily measured through cache data freshness. Keep in mind that search engines don’t necessarily recache your page every time they fetch it, but the more often your deep content is recached, the more likely that your site has good crawlability.

Good crawlability ensures that a search engine is most likely to fetch your most important pages more often than others, but also that it’s most likely to fetch a lot of pages rather than just a few. You manage or influence crawl by pointing a lot of links to HTML sitemap pages, embedding links to sibling pages in on-page navigation, and using local hub structures for logical sections of your site.

I generally recommend building at least 3 internal links (from as many different parts of your site) to each page in a complex site.

Website structure facilitates or inhibits growth – If you had to add a new section to your site today, one that is large enough to contain 5 important sub-sections, each loaded with lots of content (pages), what would it take to update your navigation? If you’re thinking, “I’d have to totally rewrite the nav system” then either your navigation has outgrown its usefulness or else you planned poorly for the future.

You should be able to increase the size of your Website by about 30% without having to restructure on-site navigation. This means you won’t severely inhibit crawlability. New sections/content should compensate for their crawl-draining value by adding more internal links to the mix. This is not about passing anchor text to your competitive pages. This is about ensuring that spiders keep finding links to crawl that are deemed important enough to crawl.

If you cannot easily add 30% more content to your site, then you need to start working on a rewrite of the navigation system before you find yourself in crawl crisis mode. It’s broken if you don’t have unused navigational bandwidth, so fix it as soon as possible.

Website structure may improve your on-site navigation – There are four points of optimization that any Web publisher can influence: on-page, on-site, off-site, and SERP. URL structure is an on-site optimization factor, rather than an on-page factor (although most people incorrectly treat it as an on-page factor). Because you may have nested directories, your URL structure may be very complex.

If you believe that search engines pay attention to page URLs (and you should), then your Website structure can be enhanced to help your URLs become more meaningful. You do want to keep them short. You do NOT want to include superfluous sub-directories just for the sake of embedding keywords. You do want to use important, relevant keywords in the page URLs.

Website structure may improve your SERP optimization – I often ask my students, “What is the first thing people see when they look for content on the Web?” Usually no one gets the answer right. It’s the first search results page, not the first Website listed at number 1. What people see on that search results page influences their decision to click through or not click through.

It is possible, for example, to influence people to click on the 2nd result more often than the first, if the 2nd result is clearly more relevant to a query than the 1st result. This happens more often than most people in the SEO industry realize. And keep in mind that “relevance” to a user may be very different from what it seems to be to a search engine.

The user may be looking for a very specific page, and may not be interested in the more algorithmically acceptable content listed above that page. Search engines cannot always deduce what the searchers really want.

Last word on Website structure – There is actually much more to be said about “Website structure” and SEO because, frankly, it goes beyond simple URL construction. You also have to look at page composition factors (are you embedding images, Javascript, iframes, etc.?). And you have to look at how presentation changes from page to page and section to section. Jarring or incongruous transitions may signal some content issues that will impact your search engine optimization.

If you don’t have a consistent page composition structure throughout your site your ability to target keywords and track return on investment for organic SEO is degraded. Uncoordinated page composition usually produces less converting traffic than coordinated page composition.

You need to look at things like percentage breakdowns of page content into boilerplate, injected keywords, original copy, advertising, etc. You also need to look at copy placement, structures used for formatting copy, and even HTML coherency.

Although writing W3C-compliant code is not necessary for search engine optimization, you can ensure your code is not broken by passing compliance tests. I think most people in the industry now agree that if nothing else, writing W3C-compliant code eliminates the headache of tracing broken structures that might inadvertently hide some indexable content from search engine parsers.

So the next time someone asks you, “Does Website structure matter to SEO?”, you’re in a position not only to say yes, but also to explain why and how. And that’s a good thing.

Basic Tips For Launching a New Website While Keeping SEO In Mind
Search Engines like Google and Yahoo have become intelligent in the past 4-5 years. It is very difficult to game search engines nowadays by manipulating tags and keyword stuffing. For a new site it may take 6 to 9 months to achieve competitive rankings at Google. From SEO point of view, I recommend the following steps for launching a new website.

i) Registering a domain name with similar Keywords
Pick a domain name which either has keywords associated with your product/service or your brand name. It is better to go for short domain names which are easy to remember. If your target market is global, go for a .com domain. If you are targeting a particular country or language, it is better to register a domain name in TLD of that country. For example, go for a .jp or .co.jp domain, if you are targeting Japan. I recommend you to register the domain for at least 2 years; more the better to gain the trust of search engines.

ii) Domain Hosting
Host your site with a reliable hosting company. Stay away from companies which allow hosting of pharmacy, gambling and adult sites, or have a history of serving spam. If you are targeting a particular country/language, it is advised to host your site in that country to boost your rankings in the local search engines for that country/language.

iii) Registering with Search Engines
Since search engines give important to domain aging and can track parameters like the registration date & first crawled date, you better register your site with search engines as early as possible. Even if your site is not fully ready, it is better to make a temporary one-two page site and register with the search engines at the earliest. Getting indexed in MSN may take only 3-4 days, whereas it may take 2-3 months to get indexed in Google and Yahoo. To speed up this process, you should build incoming links from authority websites. More the links a site receives, the less it is ignored by the search engines. It also reduces the Google sandboxing time for new sites. Submitting your sitemap to Google Webmaster Central also ensures that your site would get crawled and indexed regularly.

iv) Build trust with Search Engines
To build trust with the search engines, you should build your incoming links and content at a regular pace. Keep your content unique and relevant to your products/services. Building links from relevant websites will boost your rankings.

v) Have Web Analytics In Place; Monitor Results
The only way to know whether you are satisfying your goal (and delivering results to your business to make up for the investment!) is to track and monitor your increase in visitors and conversions. As a general rule, if your end result is too design focused, you’ll see fewer leads; If it’s too search focused, you’ll see fewer conversions. Google Page Rank Updates : Last Google PR Update

It looks like Google is rolling out a PageRank update. I woke up this morning and some of my sites were getting a new PR.
Are you guys seeing the changes too? Let me know how your PR fluctuated.

It looks like Google is getting a regular schedule for the PageRank updated again though. The last one happened at 29/30 October 2009 , so that is more or less one PR update every three/ four months or so. It would be good if they kept that pace constant.

2. Unzip upx.exe into your Firefox installation folder which is normally C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox.

3. Make sure Firefox is not running then shell to a command prompt in the Firefox installation directory.

4. Type in the following command in a single line and hit return:

5. If on some later occasion you want to unpack the files, just type in the command above but add the decompression switch "-d" after "do upx."

How to Check if a Website is Penalized by Google
There are always a question asked by all webmasters that how to check whether your website is being penalized by Google or not?

Here are few points to let you verify that your website is a victim of Google penalization or not.

Keyword Rankings:

You were top on result for some of your keywords and you see a major and sudden drop in all those keywords. This indicates that your website is probably being penalized by Google because your Google SERP is very down.

Number of Page Index:

Large numbers of pages from your website were there in Google before when check using site: operator and now when you use site: operator, you are seeing very few pages. Most of your pages are no more in Google index. This major de-index also indicate that your website is in trouble.

Page Weight Loss:

If you see that your pages are there in Google when you use site: operator. Next thing to check is the weight of these pages. Even if these pages are there in Google index. They are not appearing in search results or appearing very last in results when you give complete post title plus your blog or website name.

Google Cache:

Number of Backlinks:

What Is Google Caffeine? New Version of Google Search Is Launching Soon

Google Caffeine is an "under the hood" development in the Google search engine algorithm that will augment (slightly) how sites rank on Google's search engine results pages (SERP). The addition of Google Caffeine means that your current website search engine optimization (SEO) may become less effective and you may lose or gain position in search engine results for certain keywords. Google Caffeine is not yet integrated into the standard algorithm, but you can observe where your website and other websites stand in 'Caffeine-induced' results by visiting the Google Caffeine test site, http://www2.sandbox.google.com

Google "Caffeine", the new search engine improves the index size, the speed of the queries and most importantly, changes the value of search engine rankings.

In a post on Webmaster Central Blog, Google notified the world that the next Google search engine was ready for testing.

My first impressions about Google "Caffeine" has been pretty good. Search results in both new and old Google come back lightning quick. I have to take Google's word on the fact that the new search engine is a few milliseconds quicker on almost every search I did (one tie).

I also have to take their word on numbers of results. I am seeing sometimes as many as 10 times the search results in the new Google. I'll assume Google knows how many results it has. Interestingly when I did a search for things like "Online pharmacy", the new Google returned fewer results than the old one. This tells me that the new Google is smarter at finding fake websites and de-indexing them

The results are what makes Google so popular and will be the true test of how good this new engine is. In my tests, the new Google pulls significantly different results than the old Google. For what I was searching for (my name, people I knew, events, computer hardware) the results were significantly better. In fact, it looks like the search keywords have become much bigger a factor than before. I'm seeing smaller sites rise to the top more overall.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) specialists are going to have to go on a whole new formula for getting their clients to the top...and who knows exactly how this new Google search algorithm works? SEO people are going to have to start nailing down the new rules to Pagerank to keep their customers on top.

Finally, how does it compare to Bing?

Not too bad in my tests. It is certainly faster as well. I've been a Google person for the last 6 years and I am not seeing anything bad in the new Google or good in the new Bing that will change that.

Speaking of making a difference, it would be nice if some developer would add this new search to the Safari/Firefox browser search bars. That would really boost my testing capabilities. Any takers?

Andy Beard thought the drop was because of text selling which was reported about a week or so ago. This turns out not to be the case.

Techcrunch reported that Google didn't drop the page ranks because of the selling of text links, but because of link farms. Links farms are where each site in the network provides hundreds of outgoing links on each page of the blog to other blogs in the network, in some cases creating tens, even hundred of thousands of cross links.

This all comes a week after the linking characteristics of Techcrunch was analysed. Where it was reported that 1/3 of all Techcrunch outgoing links where to related Techcrunch sites. Hence, link farms do explain why the Techcrunch page rank hasnt changed, but the Crunchbase ranking is now at 0.

These changes will affect a lot of blog networks that survive on text link ads and related sales that depend on strong Google page ranks. A drop from a PR7 to PR4 should really affect traffic too heavily but it will make the tough job of selling ads much tougher. In the coming months and years I think we will see a lot of small blog networks starting to struggle and trying to find another way to survive.

About 1 months ago now I saw a decrease from a PR3 to a PR2 for one of my site and I found it difficult to work out why, and about a month ago when Google announced that selling text link ads would bring in a punishment, I finally found out why.

So, why the decrease? As I wait to research on the decrease, there are many reasons why Google may be changing it's PageRank algorithm.

Paid Linking : The easy excuse is that they’re targeting paid links, but not all sites which experienced the drop sell or buy links.

Mass Linking : Do we link out to too many sites via Blog Rolls? Does Linkbait just result in TOO MANY links, even if they are natural. Do blog networks use influential linking to their advantage? I think PageRank has been spread too thin and Google is changing its PageRank formula to address the mass publishing which has taken place over the past 2 years.

Devalue PageRank : PageRank is seen by many as the end all value of a web site. Our PageRank dropped but we are receiving more Google search traffic than ever. PageRank does not define site rankings in Google or traffic and it should not be mistaken as so.

Do you offer free promotions and monthly contests for new members? No matter how many bells & whistles your site has, all of this is virtually worthless if you cannot drive traffic to your website. Building links to your website is one of the smartest things a webmaster can do to establish a solid web presence. You will have direct traffic as a result of people clicking on the links, and indirect traffic from partner sites with higher rankings at the major search engines.

As you might already know, Google uses a system called link popularity and link reputation to determine a site's relevance and position in the search rankings. The mantra stands: the more links you have leading to you on other web pages, the higher your site’s ranking. Link reputation, on the other hand, means how important the incoming links are to your webpage. If you have your website link at a Professional Dog Trade Show site with 200,000 monthly visitors, you will have a higher link reputation than if you had it posted on Sally's Personal Dog Page with 10 visitors a month. In essence, the more traffic your "affiliate" sites have, the more illustrious your link reputation and the higher rankings you will achieve.

Posting your links to any website is not the premise here. Since search engines decipher from the most relevant results, websites with your link must be on the same topic of interest as yours. Suppose Bill Smith searches for "Ultimate Championship Fighting". The first group of relevant sites would be the one with the most links from sites about Ultimate Fighting. Plus, it is not often you see a Woodworking site linking to a Porsche appreciation page. Optimizing your website with the keywords Ultimate Championship Fighting and affiliating with related fighting pages will nail you a lot more traffic, leading to higher link popularity. So go ahead - become affiliated with related websites (preferably the highest ranking ones if you can) and get your link posted on their pages for higher traffic.

Google Caffeine: Google's New Search Engine Index

Is Google Caffeine Faster?
Microsoft has recently unveiled their new search engine, Bing. And with the recent announcement that Microsoft's Bing is going to soon power the Yahoo organic search results, Google needed to do something to keep their market share of search.

Google has unveiled a new test version of their search engine, which is being called "Caffeine". This is being touted as the "next generation of search".

Google's Matt Cutts said, on the Google Webmaster Central blog that they're very interested in feedback:

"Right now, we only want feedback on the differences between Google's current search results and our new system. We're also interested in higher-level feedback ("These types of sites seem to rank better or worse in the new system") in addition to "This specific site should or shouldn't rank for this query." Engineers will be reading the feedback, but we won't have the cycles to send replies."
By letting the public test the new version of Google search (which is noticeably without the Google AdWords ads), Google is able to use the public as their reviewers: and typically Google's best critics will reveal issues that need to be addressed. If you are testing out the new version of Google, and you find a search result that is not to your liking, there is a "Dissatisfied? Help us improve" link at the bottom of the search results page.

What is different between the old version of Google (what we currently see at www.google.com) and this new "Google Caffeine" version of Google? Some are saying that this new version is much faster than the older version of Google. Mashable's conclusion is that "This search is not only faster, but in some instances in our few tests, seems more capable of producing real-time results."

One of the claims of Google Caffeine is that it does a better job at including recent search results. Let's take a look at a recent search phrase, one that Google most likely would not have indexed a few days ago, and look compare the results. One of the "trending topics" on Twitter as I write this is "RIP Eunice Kennedy". So, let's use this keyword phrase as a test.

On Google Caffeine there appears to be a search result that was indexed 25 minutes ago. Google does not typically show a "cached" version of recent search results.

And on the "normal" Google search results, the search results appear to be almost exactly the same:

In fact, what is interesting is that both versions of Google are currently indexing Twitter statuses from one hour ago or even sooner. I honestly expected that this new Google Caffeine version would be indexing Twitter statuses much faster than one hour ago. So, let's see if this is the case. I searched for this phrase on both Google Caffeine and on the "normal" Google: [site:twitter.com "RIP Eunice Kennedy"].

Google Caffeine is not indexing as many web pages as the "normal" Google search, while the timeliness of the search results appears to be about the same. There are "tweets" from Twitter.com that show up in the Google search results (on both the Caffeine and on Google.com) as quickly as 10 minutes ago. A quick test on another trending topic on Twitter reveals the same results on both, a search for this shows Google is about 21 minutes behind: [site:twitter.com "Social Media Pillows"]

What about comprehensiveness? I have tested many searches with on both Google Caffeine and on Google.com and am not noticing any better indexing (or indexing of more pages) on several websites I have tested. I used the "site:" command on both and found that on some searches Google Caffeine is indexing more pages.

But on other "site:" searches, there are more pages indexed on Google.com. So, I'm not convinced (yet) that this new Google Caffeine is more comprehensive. In fact, the old Google.com has more pages indexed on Twitter (site:twitter.com) than Google Caffeine.

What about relevancy? I tested several search results, including those that included city names and specific "local searches" and I'm not seeing much of a difference at this time. So, the jury is still out: Google Caffeine appears to be faster than "old Google", but the other changes that have been made to Google Caffeine are not really that noticeable.

Blog carnivals are usually held by one blog. In them, the owner reads submissions and decides which ones to put in a post about the carnival. About 5-10 entries are picked for each post. The owners of the carnivals generally don't expect a post back to them - maybe just a trackback - so it's basically a free link to your blog. It can attract readers too. It's not spammy, too, as all of the posts are related in the same category (business, satire, family, pets, etc.)
It's really easy to do: just go to blogcarnival.com, sign up, look for some carnivals that match your blog category, and submit. You can also run your own carnival if you want.
Blog carnivals are actually quite good promotion methods - they won't harm you, at least. Unless you get dizzy on the merry-go-round. Ha. I made a bad joke.
And on a quick note, Newsvine.com (a news site where people tag news/opinion/other articles and post them on their own page) gives a free backlink if you submit your own site (dunno if you guys do that. I don't see any penalties for it). It also appeared on my Technorati blog feedback with an authority of 50-100. It's another option if you have a news blog or just have a few news posts.

Mytheory opinion: Actually, some bloggers have known about this method of blog promotion through blogcarnival, and they like it because it does drive traffic to their blog (if u have great post of course). So, i suggest you to make real good content first if you want to submit it to carnaval then.

Blog commenting is one of the best way of getting backlinks to our sites/blog. And if you frequently gather backlink by that way (blog commenting) you must be familiar with Dofollow or nofollow links attribute. You may be wonder why the webmasters (Matt Cutts and Jason Shellen) design nofollow attributes, because all we know is nofollow link attributes doesn't give our page any reputation (such as PR calculation). But recently i found why nofollow link attributes is so damn important for both web owner or the webmasters who want to gather backlinks from it.

1.It prevents comment spamming.
Remember that most of people who want to gather link juice, always do it by leaving poor quality comment(s) to blog which use dofollow attributes, they think it is wasting time to leave a comment on nofollow blog. So, nofollow blog have smaller chance to receive comment spam.
2.You don't want to pass reputation on to a website.
For example you write a post about how people doing spam comment, and you provide link that point to website which offer automatic comment service. Anyhow you don't want to give any reputation to that kind of website, so you can use nofollow attributes to that link.

Working from home is a whole new way of working — a revolution in industry, in society, in the way we live. Or is it? While making a living by sitting in a café with a frappucino and a two-way link to the cloud might be something your parents never dreamed of doing, the idea that you can ignore the corporate world and earn from home is actually about as modern as iron horseshoes and knitting needles. In fact, not only are today’s home-based tech workers more traditional than the average cubicle drone, they actually have a long way to go before their numbers come close to those of the good old days despite recent trends.

According to the US Census Office, the number of people who work at home more than two days a week increased between 1980 and 1990 by 56 percent from 2.2 million to 3.4 million.That’s a remarkable rise and one made all the more impressive by happening before the expansion of the Internet. In the decade following 1990, as communications improved and email replaced memos, the figures increased by a further 22.8 percent to reach 4.2 million people. By 2000, the Census Office reports, 3.3 percent of the working population was able to skip the commute for most of their workweek.

When One in Fourteen Worked from Home

But those are still significantly lower than the numbers in 1960 when almost 4.7 million people were earning their keep from home – a full 7.2 percent of the population. That number halved over the following twenty years, a decline which the Census Office puts down primarily to the closure of family farms and the movement of doctors and other professionals away from home offices and towards large shared practices.

But it wasn’t just the last of the small farmers and home-visiting doctors who were able to call their homes their workspaces in the 1960s. Some of the most important contributions to American culture were being produced in home offices even before the era of free love and one-way commutes to Southeast Asia.

Pay a visit to Frank Lloyd Wright’s home in Oak Park, Illinois, for example, and you’ll be able to see not just the house in which the creator of the Prairie style lived from 1889-1909 but also the office in which he designed 125 of the country’s most important structures. Nor was his own home just a workplace. It was also an architectural laboratory on which he tested his design concepts and theories. Most home workers work in their house. Frank Lloyd Wright’s house was also his work.

That a creative professional like an architect should be able to avoid an office building is perhaps not surprising. Designers, painters, sculptors and other arty types tend to work alone, relying on their own inspiration to deliver their ideas. They rarely need the kinds of equipment that’s best supplied by large office buildings and having secretaries, assistants, sales staff and watercoolers around might even be distracting. Around 40 percent of artists are believed to work from home studios – or at least they do until children come along and claim the studio as their bedroom.

The Web’s Work from Home Industrial Revolution

According to the 1990 census though, almost half of all home workers were in the service industries, which included business and repair work, entertainment and recreation, and “other professional and related services.” By 2000, 1.9 million people were providing “professional services” from home – by far the most popular category – but there were also more than 42,000 people preparing food professionally in their own kitchens and over half a million cutting hair, giving massages and delivering other kinds of personal care. Interestingly, almost 5,000 people in the fishing, hunting and forestry professions worked from home at the start of the millennium too. You have to wonder about the size of their yards.

Even this variety might not be anything new. Perhaps the most important characteristic of the Industrial Revolution was the movement to cities as factories became the shared workspaces of a new urban working class. But what were those new proletarians doing before the opening of the mills and the invention of automated looms that could fill factory floors and lop off children’s fingers? Some, as in early twentieth century America, would have been driving horses on farms but others would have been crafting from home. For women in particular, the loss of hand looms to the spinning jenny meant a shift away from home and family to cotton mills and hard-nosed bosses. For men too, the rise of the assembly line marked the end of the kind of sweating, hammering and hand-crafting of unreliable quality that could be done in a home workshop.

Interestingly, Peter Sweeney, Founder & CTO of semantic technology firm Primal Fusion, has described Web 3.0 as the Internet’s own industrial revolution, a time when the social connections of Web 2.0 gives way to the automated production of content. Wolfram Alpha, he says, is one example of the way in which information can be produced automatically and without the kind of work-at-home handicraft that predated Dickens and which now characterizes the Web’s co-working content producers.

That sounds unlikely. Easy communication is only going to increase the return to home-working and recession hit tech-types who have spent the last few months consulting from home will take some persuading to get back to the traffic jams when the economy does pick up. But today’s home-workers are now primarily tapping keyboards rather than driving tractors. They’re in the cities rather than in the dust fields of Oklahoma (although many of them, like those former agriculturalists, are also now in California). And unlike independent spinners and weavers, they find that they can compete easily with the productivity levels of factory and office-based employees.

Working from home then isn’t a new way of working. It’s a return to an old, traditional – and more enjoyable — way of working, and don’t let the Luddites tell you otherwise.

First space hotel to open by 2012‎

A private space tourism company, Galactic Suite Limited, has announced that they will be opening the first space hotel in 2012

The company is offering a three-night stay for 3 million euros ($4.4 million).

The zero-g resort will orbit the Earth at 30,000 mph, completely circling the planet once every 80 minutes, while offering visitors 15 sunrises per day.

Galactic Suite plans to transport its travelers to space via Russian rockets from a spaceport to be built on a Caribbean island.

The trip to the hotel will take one day and a half and guests will undergo an eight-week training course in the Caribbean prior to launch.

Currently, the GS Project is still in design phase. The project consists of the spaceport, the ship, and the orbiting space resort.

The hotel is expected to be constructed of connecting pods around a central hub. Each pod will be able to hold four guests and two astronaut-pilots.

Galactic Suite CEO Xavier Claramunt, says “an anonymous billionaire space enthusiast” has granted $3 billion to finance the project.

Galactic Suites claim that more than 200 people have already inquired about staying at the hotel, with 43 of them actually putting in their reservations.

1. Google Webmaster Console (http://www.google.com/webmasters)- absolute leader for checking backlinks. Webmaster console is probably the most accurate source for backlink checking. The big downside is that you can only check backlinks for your own websites. Also, some people say that its yet another way for Google how to get more information about your site - if you are doing something dodgy, be careful.

2. Yahoo SiteExplorer (http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com)- if you don't have access to the webmaster console then Yahoo is your tool. Its not as accurate as GWC but still good enough. You can see up to 1000 backlinks for every domain but results include nofollow links as well. You can also export backlinks to TSV file (like CSV but separated with tabs), but only a current page.

3. Google Allinanchor command - This is not very known trick. Using allinanchor command with your website name you can get quite a lot of backlinks for your site. The advantage is that using that method you can get links which were not reported by google link command or yahoo siteexplorer e.g.

allinanchor:www.yourwebsite.com or allinanchor: yourwebsite

The disadvantage is that if your website name is a generic phrase then you will get lots of results which are not links to your site.

4. SEO Elite, Backlink Analyzer etc. (http://tools.seobook.com/backlink-analyzer) , (http://www.seoelite.com) - These tools can help you with digging up backlinks from search engines in an easier way. You don't have to manually check every page in Google/Yahoo as this tool compiles a report with backlinks along with other useful information like Google Pagerank, Alexa rating etc..

5. Alternative search engines - There are other search engines that can give you information about backlinks:
MSN - uses link operator like G or Y - link:http://www.yourwebsite.com
Exalead - uses link operator like G or Y - link:http://www.yourwebsite.com

Improving and maintaining PageRank is a top priority for webmasters because it affects how much traffic a website will receive from Google. But what many webmasters do not realize is that their websites are leaking PageRank, causing their overall site-wide PageRank to be lower than it should be.

What Is PageRank Leakage?
PageRank leakage is when outbound links to external websites give away pagerank that could be better distributed among pages within the website. The effect of pagerank leakage is most profound when a website has many links to external sites, and when internal pages are not well linked.

How To Prevent PageRank Leakage
There are two main ways to prevent PageRank leakage:

1. Eliminate many outbound links
Many websites and blogs have footers and sidebars which contain outbound links. The footer, for example, might contain links to the company that developed the website or to the content management system on which it was built. And the sidebar often contains a blogroll.

The problem is that these links are typically displayed on every page of the website, causing PageRank to exit and adding no value to the page.

To fix this problem, you can remove all of these redundant links and place them in all in one single page. This solution is very popular because it enables webmasters to share a limited amount of PageRank, while not dramatically contributing to the website’s overall PageRank leakage.

2. Use Nofollow Links
Another way to limit PageRank leakage is to completely stop links from passing PageRank. This is easily done by adding nofollow to links, as shown in the example below.

I took the skeleton insructions from here for easier reference and cross navigation for you. You can have better guidelines on what to do to install CommentLuv on your blog by seeing instructions there, and switch here if you want more detailed explanations..

The first thing to remember is, CommentLuv is a Java-based script, and thus you have to allow Javascript to run on your browser. Don't be like me, activating NoScript on my Firefox and was wondering why CommentLuv didn't work. :P My instructions, once again, is a modified version of instructions posted on commentluv.com. This instructions have been tested thoroughly and confirmed working. I recommend you to follow these instructions step by step so there won't be any mistakes happened.

Step 1
Register your site and verify it
This is a simple process. Don't tell me you don't know how to register a new account on a website.... -.- Go here-> http://www.commentluv.com/wp-login.php?action=register to register new account on commentluv.com.

Fill out the necessary fields, and continue. You will be told that a confirmation email has been sent to your mailbox. Check it and click link embedded in it to activate your account.

Next, you have to add commentluv tag to verify your site. Go here: http://www.commentluv.com/settings/ , and fill out your site address. You will have to put html code (below badges display) like provided on this pic, on your blog. Just add a new page element (Javascript) and paste the whole code there.

Once you have inserted the code, click 'verify' to claim your site. The verifying phase now is done.

Step 2
Import your comments and convert your blogger template

Again, it's a javascript based website, so disable your NoScript if you have it installed in Firefox/ add an exception for this website.

If you'd like to uninstall commentluv, just upload your original template that was backed up during js-kit installation. Just restore your original template and blogspot will delete the commentluv widget automatically. Easy, huh? ^^

One old SEO technique that I still see is that of blog commenting.

Years ago, it was an easy way to generate links to your website. All you had to do was leave a comment on a blog and either add your website to the comment or populate the URL field. Either way, you’d get a nice link to your website. It didn’t require much effort and over a few weeks you could add hundreds of links to your website from hundreds of different websites.

Naturally, the more people did this the more out of control it got. People were leaving comments such as ‘Great post!’ and then dropping a link to their website. Or they were putting their name down as ‘Cheap Car Insurance’ so that they’d get nice keyword rich anchor text as well as a link.

Unsurprisingly, this doesn’t really work anymore.

For a start, most blog owners are pretty wise to people commenting on their blogs and if they see anything that looks remotely spammy then it gets deleted. Also, the majority of blogs are configured so that all links in the comments field are ‘nofollow’, which means that Google will ignore them anyway.

So, no matter how much time you spend adding comments – it will have virtually no impact on your website’s ranking ability.

There are a few ‘dofollow’ blogs out there, and there are a few lists of dofollow blogs but beware, if you’re caught trying to spam them then the consequences can be unpleasant.

Bloggers are always hungry to learn new ways on how to improve website traffic. Here is a simple and easy tip that can help your blog website traffic skyrocket. Its very easy and you’ll kick yourself for not thinking of it sooner.

Blogs are known for burying awesome content. Basically once your post is pushed off your front page, then you leave traffic up to the Google gods. Which is fine… if you run healthy blog, Google and other search engines will pick up your post content and send you a nice trickle of constant traffic. That’s how it works for me at least…

Simply copy the URL of the blog post you found in Google Blogsearch and go back to your original post and hyperlink your keyword phrase to the blog post you found in Google Blogsearch.
Doing this will create a pingback or trackback and 9 out of 10 times it will make a machine readable link on the other blog post back to yours. Additionally, you are going to bring attention to yourself from the author of the newly created article.
If you do this on a regular basis, you will increase your traffic to your blog. Not only that, when search bots come back to your older posts to check for updates, they will see a new link and give your individual page more value.

Trustrank is a term coined by some Yahoo engineers to describe a new algorithm to determine relevant search results.

The new thing about Trustrank is that it does not solely count links like PageRank it’s based on but it also relies on authority.

Authority is measured by the proximity to a group of seed sites that are deemed to be authority sites.

It sounds complicated but in the end it’s simple: Let’s say Adobe.com is an authority site. A site x linked by Adobe.com is thus more authoritative than a site y that has been linked by site x or a site z that hasn’t been linked by any of those, Adobe, x or y. In this example y still inherits some authority from Adobe.com – Adobe trusts site x and site x trusts site y so that site y still must have some value.

Most people in the SEO industry assume that not only Yahoo employs Trustrank but Google as well without using the term maybe but inherently it’s the same concept.

How do you become an authority site? What are the actual factors of an authority site?

■filters, does a site deal with topics like xxx, gambling, generic medicines
These are some of the aspects that are most likely determining your authority on the Web both from the user and a search engine perspective.
Most of these qualities can be acquired by SEO 2.0 others require good old SEO (1.0) best practices.

For instance you can get links from seed sites by applying the SEO 2.0 way of establishing relationships with others in your industry and beyond. On the other hand broken links require good old SEO 1.0 ways of checking them. Some of the above is not even considered SEO by many, for instance checking uptimes and security measures.

So you see there is much to do to become an authority site and to please an algorithm that employs some kind of Trustrank. I’m not the scientific SEO guy so I might be not very accurate in this list above but these are commom sense aspects of a functioning website that won’t hurt your site even in case the SEO benefits were marginal.

The concept of dofollow may be a fairly new concept – especially to those outside the SEO community – but if you don’t pay attention to this very important attribute, your blog commenting strategy will be for naught. It depends somewhat if you’re after traffic or better page rank, but my guess is that a lot of people are commenting for the page rank exposure, rather than the traffic (which can be slight). What other explanation can there be for the litany of people posting comments with stellar anchor text on a PR 0 blog that has nofollow for comment links? Obviously, these aspiring marketers have no idea that their links count for nothing.

So every blog commenter should devise a good strategy for commenting on blogs in order to get the most page rank value. Here are the main commenting tips:

1. Write a useful comment. Take as much time thinking about writing a comment as you’d think about writing a paragraph on your blog. A comment needs to be tailored to the post. Yes, people are desperate for comments, but vague comments get thrown out – like “Great post. I like your style.” (just wait for some smart a*s to write that comment on this post.)

2. Find a list of blogs in your niche. It’s recommended to go to a dofollow blog directory and find dofollowers in your niche. Narrow down those dofollow blogs by pinpointing the blogs with the highest page rank (in the Google toolbar, SEOQuake plugin, or other method).

6. Look for sites that activate Commentluv, as this will add a link to an internal page. If you add Commentluv to your own site, you can choose which page to list. Otherwise, it will list your most recent post – which means after you post you should head over to your Commentluv site list and make another comment.

7. Find Top Commenter sites. Another plugin will show a blog’s top commenters (sort of irritatingly misspelled as “Top Commentators”). Often, it only takes 2 comments to make it to the list. Even sites that have nofollow enabled in comments will have dofollow for the top commenter list, so you shouldn’t always stay away from nofollow sites.

8. Make five comments a day, at least. This means you have to have a pretty big RSS feed list, because you can’t make five comments a day on the same two blogs. After the internet, USB devices are the favorite target of malware developers. A huge majority of modern trojan horses, worms and viruses automatically copy themselves onto USB devices and spread by misusing the autorun.inf file.

Ninja Pendisk is a portable application which sits quietly in the system tray and springs into action as soon as any USB device is inserted. It scans the USB drive for commonly virulent files like autorun.inf and ctfmon.exe and cleans it if any malware if detected. It also immunizes your pendrive from further infection by creating a folder called Autorun.inf with elevated privileges.

Ninja Pendisk is absolutely bare-bones software. There is basically no interface to speak of. All the configuration options are provided through the context menu of the system tray icon. It is completely automated and scans any device as soon as it is plugged-in. However, it doesn’t present any option to scan an already plugged in device or hard disks.

In my testing I found that the immunization aspect of Ninja Pendisk to be overly simplistic. I was able to delete the autorun.inf folder without any problem. Panda USB and AutoRun Vaccine does a better job at immunization by making it almost impossible to remove the autorun.inf folder without re-formatting the USB Drive. However, it did succeed in removing all the malware from my pen drive. Ninja Pendisk does a decent job at protecting you from USB viruses, but there isn’t any reason why you would need it if you already have an antivirus software.

That’s how you see websites in the search results of Google and Yahoo!.

If your site ranks high for any search terms related to the products you promote, you can get several potential customers (a very daunting task indeed). You should try to get links from whichever sources available. It is a tactic in Search Engine Optimization (SEO). In the past, when you commented in a blog, you could get a backlink, just by using this HTML code:

When you placed this piece of code within your comment, you used to get backlink from it. It was highly beneficial for you to rank high (especially if the blog is high PageRank).

What is NoFollow?

Soon the scenario changed. In 2005, Matt Cutts, Google’s webspam team head and Jason Shellon of Blogger brought up a new attribute in HTML codes—NOFOLLOW. Nofollow is a HTML tag added to the link anchor code, and will change the normal code as:

< a href=”your link URL” rel=”nofollow”>your link name

This is automatically done. Meaning, when you comment with the link, the NoFollow attribute will be added automatically. And the result is deep. The link will be valueless and the search crawlers would not follow them to index. So, such a link is as useless as a piece of text. Blogger blogs soon adopted this and being Google’s regulation, all or most of other search engines also adopted this.

Though this is a good scheme to prevent comment spamming, it hit the genuine commenters. They also lost so many backlinks, and a nice easy way to get them. But people started working against this. The bloggers started removing NoFollow attribute from the comments of valuable commenters. And a different attribute, DoFollow began.

Many bloggers followed suit. Today there are so many DoFollow blogs, and by commenting on these blogs, with your backlink, you can get full value on that link. You can use such blogs and comment links in them to promote your own site in search results. Soon enough, so many DoFollow search engines also started coming, which index only DoFollow blogs. You can search for a particular term, and get the related DoFollow blogs.

A DoFollow comment will be a normal comment as in the above or will have the attribute “rel=’dofollow’” instead of nofollow, as in:

< a href=”link URL” rel=”dofollow”>link name

The attribute DoFollow or no rel attribute at all means the blog link is good. Though no attribute in HTML exists as DoFollow, it means that the blog is not NoFollow, so it has the same effect of a normal backlink.

How to Make Your Blogger Blog DoFollow?

Before doing these steps, you should allow anonymous comments by going to Settings in Blogger and then Comments. You may enable or disable the moderation. You will soon know the importance of moderation, however. Here are the steps to make comments DoFollow:

1. Go to Blogger layout (in new Blogger) and click Edit HTML.

2. Check Expand Widget Templates.

3. Search for ‘NoFollow.’ You will find at least two of them in the code.

4. Remove “rel=”nofollow”” from the tag that starts with a expr:href='data:comment.authorUrl

5. The second nofollow attribute is for pingback/trackback URLs (blogs that link to your post and ping it). You may or may not retain these URLs. It’s completely optional.

6. That’s it! Enjoy. Your comment’s title is now ‘DoFollow.’

In old Blogger, you can do this by editing HTML in Template tab.

By doing this in Blogger, the comment title will be made DoFollow. But the backlinks will be available only if you comment with Name and URL field enabled. The comment body links will still remain NoFollow. So, you needn’t place any link in the body, just place the required anchor text in the name field, and URL in the URL filed and comment; it will become a DoFollow backlink to your URL.

How to Make WordPress Blogs DoFollow?

As I have no idea of WordPress blogs, and have never worked with them, I am not sure if this helps or not. But you can make the WordPress blogs or self-hosted WordPress blogs DoFollow by using a simple plug-in here.

Youtube: It has a great Google PR with so many backlinks from other sites either do-follow or no-follow. Video marketing here in Youtube is so useful when its part of SEO strategy, because you advertise your products and services with great innovation.

Aside from the article I've submitted at Ezine, I also submitted a press release content in a press release site (yet to be revealed). It's about 500+ words because press releases are just news type articles, I can submit them to multiple press release directories and there are hundreds of them. I'm sure and confident that my press release will be approved within one week or less, just like Ezine. Press releases are good in traffic because with the backlink of course, your site is relevant to the news article or the press release itself. Some people said that press releases are realy worthy and makes your backlink last longer than any other methods. This is the first time I'm doing this, and still part of my SEO plan.

Are you doing blog comments recently, for a number of blogs? For me, this is one of the difficult and exhausting jobs I've ever known. Most webmasters are usually relying on do-follow blogs, so it's not easy for me because there are only less than 10% chance that you can find a do-follow blog. More than 90% chance are no-follow and dead links because they don't want spammers to just spam their blog and gain backlinks from their site. They would insist that spammers only destroys the image of their topic, likewise their whole blog as well. Last time, I just bought from someone at DigitalPoint on his complete list of do-follow blogs which are auto-approved, most of them are .edu and .gov websites. We can only buy do-follow blogs from the experts, but I think there's only a slight chance that we can see do-follow blogs for free.

I have received so many spam e-mails as of this moment, until now...for an average of 50 to 100 in my Yahoo e-mail. That's why I have subscribed to hundreds of programs that offers free download of hundreds of digital products that are being auctioned online. I also received many e-mails to promote their HYIP (High Yield Investment Program) and income schemes that will make me possible "rich guy"? I could believe it, but I'm still not yet ready for that because most of them needs payment in order to be enrolled in the program. This is another way of doing SEO? Definitely not, this is what we call e-mail marketing. E-mail messages with links of your site will not let you generate backlinks, but only for promotional purposes and referral credits. It's not SEO what I think, because the receivers can delete and trash the e-mail anytime, and considered spamming around the corner.

Spamdexing - What is it?

Spamdexing originally was the art of sticking a lot of words into a document and hoping to catch unlinkely searches no one else would look for. And example of this would be 'pokemon waffle sexy banana discount. By stuffing these into a document itself, often multiple times in different orders, guaranteeing you a large list of words, such as sexy discount and pokemon waffle.

Spamdexing has already evolved since then- and has gathered a large number of names and a lot of different topics. Long tail uses the same principle. It gets you the combination of the railing names. Typically, long tail isn't automated, and when I see it I think very differently then I do when I see it as spamdex, as portland-pianos-oregon-music reads a lot better then pokemon-waffle-sexy-banana-discount.

Now here comes the clever- using separate pages to perform long tail automatically like it would be done with spamdexing. First, what are we selling- this is a doorway/hallway site to another site. lets assume its credit repair.

so, wendelbee.com wants traffic, but getting to the top of credit repair isn't an option with his budget. You then create a subdomain, we'll call it universal-credit.com. We then use htaccass, a database, and php to create a system of automatic pages. so, you have universal-credt.com/city-state-credit-repair, so you get a database of all the cities and all the states, and you create a list of a hrefs targeting them, having the cities based on states. So, it would automatically create beaverton-oregon-credit-repair, portland-oregon-credit-repair, gresham-oregon-credit-repair, etc. These links exist and are indexed by google. Naturally, limit the amount of pages shown on any given page- maybe have a break down of each state.

These pages should be easy to seo, and could use automatically content generation, such as random paragraphs written with random state and city names thrown in. I recommend just hiring a content writer- it can be a little expensive, but its completely worth it. These pages are doorways to the main site- it may even be worth it to ahve them look similar to the original site.

So, you get this spamdex idea now- there is a problem, however. Google is aware of this trick, and while I've never heard of them being banned, if it is to blatantly automated, there will probably be a problem at some point. Do a good job. From there, you have all the keywords you needed. This is often done with affiliate companies and people who try to make a living off advertising. The really kicker is- it mostly is passive income. At worst, you update content every once and again. The fact its a throw away site means in the unlikely event you get banned, it can be hosted elsewhere. Do a good job and you won't need to worry about it.

This is a genius, and kind of funny method I found today accidentally. This is the best spamdexing I've ever seen, honestly, and the sites are so different its astounding.

Why would they have a handful of different e-mail addresses? Each different class c has value of a link, which means they could be link farming, or even micrositing. This was a great tactic.

Google Maybe the most comprehensive image search provider of the web. But some webmasters don't know how to get their images indexed by Google.

Googlebot as we all know ignores images. So, how the damm it has an image search?

If your site is "Search Engine Friendly" and is a bit old, then Google must index its images too.A bit old site is required because Google dosen't update the Image Index "frequently"
If you are an impatient Webmaster, like me, Google Webmasters have an option for Enhanced Image Search. If you choose to enable enhanced image search, Google will use tools such as Google Image Labeler to associate the images included in your site with labels that will improve indexing and search quality of those images

For those who don't know about Google Image Labeler.Google Image Labeler is a new feature of Google Image Search that allows you to label random images to help improve the quality of Google's image search results.

In this You'll be randomly paired with a partner who's online and using the feature. Over a 90-second period, you and your partner will be shown the same set of images and asked to provide as many labels as possible to describe each image you see. When your label matches your partner's label, you'll earn some points and move on to the next image until time runs out. Are You Really Earning from Adsense?

The sole purpose why I am writing this blog post is because I have received many complaints from fellow bloggers that they do not earn as expected from adsense. Everyday hundreds of bloggers start off their money making expedition with a hope that after few months or years they may be earning high by participating in programs such as Google Adsense.

After few days or weeks most of them leave blogging because they do not earn even a buck. Some may be cheating by clicking on their own ads or asking others to do that or just participating in programs that gives automated clicks. Such bloggers are either “banned” immediately or when they are about to receive their earnings.

When they are banned, they leave blogging. Then, a few honest publishers are left who are literary embarrassed by their earnings even after getting traffic or page rank. Most of them also leave blogging until they are fed-up. Then a few remain who just wait for the day when they would be the next Darren Rowse.

But that’s the truth, you can’t earn living by your Adsense earnings. According to me only few would be really making something out of adsense.

I've been wondering around on the web to look for an service that provides script for commenting on new blogger blogs.Reason: to comment, you have to click on an external link,first sign in {if you aren't} then retype then fill in CAPTCHA {if enabled}.This is a very time consuming and irritating process.On the other hand, Wordpress blogs have on site comment forms which invites more and more readers to comment, easily.

AwStats
AwStats (Advanced Web Statistics) is another popular open source website statistics program. You can find it on most cpanel interfaces and it also works with most major server platforms. For many web developers, AwStats collects a vast amount of information including all the types of data collected by Webalizer. In addition, it can differentiate between human visitors and robots. It can also collect information on which countries visitors come from, bandwidth usage, top 25 users, the duration of time visitors spent on your site, most popular pages, computer operating systems used, the URL address from which visitors arrived, search keywords and key phrases that visitors used, etc. For the small-to-midsize web developer, AwStats is a powerful program that is fully featured.

Google Analytics
Google Analytics is a free statistics and analytical program used mainly by web developers as part of the Google AdSense network. However, it also provides useful information on many other aspects of web traffic and website marketing. While Google Analytics is an excellent tool for smaller developers that monetize their site with Google advertising, many web developers might find it easier to track web traffic with the other programs mentioned above.

Fee-Based Analytic and Statistical Software
If you have an e-commerce business or would like to have access to comprehensive, real-time data regarding your websites, you should probably look into fee-based analytic and statistical software. While these programs are fee-based, they are in most cases well worth the investment. They can give you a variety of tools to delve deep into your web traffic.

Well after launching Guruji Music Search Engine in August 2008, Guruji took one more step ahead and introduced Guruji Ads.

There is no option provided to choose the minimum payout and payment method. For Indians, you need PAN to get your payments.

So far I have made nearly Rs. 396 /- from AdGuru. And it may take some more time for me to get a pay cheque from Guruji.

One thing that needs to be pointed is that even Guruji is not promoting its Ads(AdGuru) in a full fledged manner. They are using Google Ads along with Guriji Ads as Sponsored Links. They can use Guruji Ads alone for promotion.

A Google Adsense disabled publisher will surely look for other alternatives and surely Guruji’s AdGuru is one for them.

On the whole it will take a lot of time for AdGuru to become as popular as Adsense since it is beta state. Hope Guruji will become Indian Google Adsense in the future !!

1. No search box : Internet users resort to the search box whenever they need to find something specific. Some people even use search to navigate around websites. If you don't have a (visible) search box on your site, those users will get very frustrated.

2. No archives : It is essential to have a page where the visitor can browser through all your posts. Apart from improving the user experience, this page will also be healthy for your search engine optimization, as it works as a sitemap.

3. No contact page : It is very annoying for visitors if they have something to tell you and can't find a way to get in touch. Secondly, you risk losing valuable feedback if that is the case.

4. Complex navigation : Try to make your navigation structure as simple as possible. This involves using a main navigation bar, having a link back to the homepage on all internal pages, avoiding drop-down menus and so on.

5. Bad typography : If people can't read your content comfortably they will just head somewhere else. Make sure that your font is big enough, that the letter and line spacing is adequate, that you have enough white space surrounding the content and so on.

Types of Bad Link Building : Borrowing, Begging, Bartering, Bribing and Buying

Even though this information has been read by thousands of people, it still hasn't been read [or understood] by enough people.

Do you know? A week doesn't go by without someone asking me whether they should pay a company to build links the wrong way.

So, what's the wrong way?

Borrowing
I guarantee that someone will leave a comment on this post with a link to their website in the body of their comment. Here's an example.

This is borrowing links.

Many blogs allow commenters to insert links into the body of their comments. Many don't.

So, these link borrowers also resort to inserting their keywords where their name is supposed to go. I wrote a controversial post about this bad practice previously, "Why Leaving Comments is Not a Link Building Strategy."

Our blog software's spam filter catches many of these comments. Yet not every site has spam filters in place, and many people automate or just cut and paste such comments all over the web. This is borrowing and it is wrong. Doing it might get you a short-term, unsustainable burst in rankings. But these are not high quality links. And won't provide long term advantage.

Begging
Then, there's the beggars. They send emails to people they don't know asking for links.

I recently received a really creative e-mail. The person inroduced himself as a big fan of my writing and suggested that "based on reading what I write" I should check out this new social networking site. He wrote about how awesome the site was (without any explanation why). He suggested that I should write about it because everyone else who did it received floods of traffic. He got very offended when I responded that I wasn't interested and that he should be more upfront about his link begging intentions.

Of course, begging comes in many forms. Not all are as creative as this guy. Most people just send emails to webmasters asking them to link to them. While begging is one way to build links, it is ineffective and the fastest way to annoy a webmaster.

Bartering
I'll link to you, if you link to me. I'll buy your services, if you buy mine. I'll show you mine, if you show me yours.

Aah. How adolescent does that sound? And how much easier do you think you can make it for Google to detect that you didn't earn that link? Google's power is that it detects patterns. This is a pretty easy pattern to detect: "Site B links to Site A. Site A links to Site B."

Of course, bartering or trading links gets more creative by saying, "I'll link to you, if you link to him and I'll link to this other guy if he links to you, etc." There are even networks you can join to facilitate this process.

Participating in these "link building rings" is even riskier than regular bartering. It's believed that Google labels websites into "neighborhoods." There are "bad neighborhoods" that you don't want to live in. By interlinking with websites in a bad neighborhood, Google will think you too are bad.

Bribing
Many companies try to bribe webmasters and bloggers for links. We'll send you stuff if you link to us. Although harder for Google to detect, this isn't a great practice. In fact, the FTC frowns upon this. I'm not sure whose wrath I'd fear more--the FTC's or Google's. Either way, it is best to not disobey the government.

Buying
Several sites and services help you buy text links on other sites that pass SEO credit. There is also a black market in link buying that is much less formal, more secretive and not necessarily that organized. I wouldn't recommend either one.

If you're not too averse to risk taking, this is probably the most effective link building strategy of the Bad B's, because you can control what sites you are getting links from, and analyze these sites to ensure that you are not placing links in bad neighborhoods. You can also place links within relevant content and use anchor text for the keywords you are trying to rank for. But, and it's a big but, it's still risky. Google explicitly states:

However, some SEOs and webmasters engage in the practice of buying and selling links that pass PageRank, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and the long-term impact it will have on their sites. Buying or selling links that pass PageRank is in violation of Google's webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact a site's ranking in search results.

Therefore, although it might work, I do not advocate buying links.

In fact, as you might have guessed, we do not advocate borrowing, begging, bartering, bribing or buying links.

If I had to pick a winner in the fight between a surreptitious link builder or Google's algorithms, I'd pick the algorithms. In other words, Google will eventually perfect their detection of who is B'ing links and who is earning them.

I personally know entrepreneurs with websites that were generating tens of thousands of dollars one month and zero the next because of practicing the Bad B's of link building.

Don't do it. The risk isn't worth it. Learn to build links the right way.
